Sustainability is the New Luxury

Alila Villas Uluwatu is strongly committed to social, cultural and environmental responsibilities, which we regard as essential for sustainable business. In all activities, we aim to respect and preserve the way of life and traditions of local communities and endeavour to minimise our impact on the environment by adhering to a policy of environmental sustainability.

Design

Blending in with the surrounding natural environment, the design of the interiors at Alila Villas Uluwatu is completely integrated with the architecture, seamlessly flowing from inside to outside. This cutting-edge modern hotel in Bali is designed by award-winning Singapore architectural firm WOHA, whose global reputation for innovative sustainable-design projects in tropical environments has earned numerous accolades.

Green Initiatives

We are proud that Alila Villas Uluwatu has embraced environmentally sustainable design (ESD) principles and is the first resort in Indonesia to receive the highest level of certification from EarthCheck as a Best Practice Building Planning and Design (BPDS) development. We utilise many ESD measures, including use of local materials, water conservation with soaks and rain gardens and a waste water management system, using local plants from the special Bali savannah ecosystem, the deliberate use of sustainable/recycled materials, protection of the natural environment, and measured work practices throughout construction.

Lava Rocks

Alila has combined its knowledge of sustainability with the use of lava rocks to absorb the Bali heat. Lava rock offers several advantages, such as its resistance to colour fade, its ability to serve as a source of natural insulation, and its ability to control weeds. By absorbing heat, it also keeps air-conditioning energy consumption to a minimum.

Organic Garden

All organic waste that has been processed and transformed into compost at the Sustainability Lab is sent to our organic garden, where it contributes positively to the soil quality and helps to produce fresh, organic ingredients. In the garden, we also offer an extraordinary journey of gastronomy for our guests, where they can learn traditional recipes from our local chefs using fresh local ingredients.

Earlier this year, Alila Villas Uluwatu created its own Chili Garden, where it currently grows four varieties of chili, a key ingredient in Balinese cuisine. Imitating nature, the garden features a diverse ecosystem that also includes lemongrass, citronella, fruit trees, edible flowers and herbs.

Biodegradable Amenities

Alila Villas Uluwatu is Bali’s pioneer hotel in substituting plastic-based amenities with ones made from biodegradable and compostable materials, such as bamboo straws and dental kits; small changes that embrace sustainability yet without compromising luxury or quality.

Recycling and Upcycling

The resort is also determined to reduce its waste production, as well as to reuse, recycle and upcycle as much as possible. Its signature upcycling processes involve making glasses from glass bottles, tiles from broken glass and ceramics, compost from landscaping waste, and pots from buggy tyres.

Sustainability Lab

Alila Villa Uuwatu approaches waste in a whole new way. The centrepiece of our Zero Waste Policy is an on-site laboratory where all waste streams are transformed into higher value products and services through a series of simple yet proven mechanical and biological engineering systems. From producing our own compost to our glass recycling programme and organic garden, this site is built to accommodate our efforts to create a better environment

Water Bottling Plant

Small step, big impact indeed. Alila Villas Uluwatu believes in the importance of environmental sustainability. We are aware that recycling is an essential step. It’s a form of waste management that involves converting waste and other used materials into reusable products. One of the significant steps we have taken is to completely remove all plastic drinking bottles and replace them with glass bottles. We produce our own drinking water using a water purification system that significantly reduces plastic waste and is a good cost-saving strategy for the resort

Proud signatory of the UN’s Global Tourism Plastics Initiative

Led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the initiative was launched in January 2020 to unite the tourism sector to take concerted action that addresses the root causes of plastic pollution, leading by example in the shift towards circularity in the use of plastics.

No Plastic Policy

In line with our zero-waste initiative, Alila Villas Uluwatu has eliminated all single-use plastic usage throughout the resort, including back of house, since 1st June 2021. This includes no plastic food packaging, bags or cutlery, among others. At the same time, we encourage our team members and guests to bring their own reusable bags.

A Collaborative Community Effort

It takes a village to make sure that no waste produced becomes pollution. The success of the resort’s in-house waste management system is the result of multiple collaborations, both internal and external. As well as empowering the Sustainability Lab team to create and have ownership of the process, local community partnerships help process and recycle waste generated by the resort that cannot be processed in-house while creating win-win situations for all. These partnerships include:

  • Tambyak Lestari, a community-based pig farm – picks up food waste to feed their pigs.
  • EcoBali, a local recycling company – handles plastics, cardboard, paper and metals.
  • Yayasan Lengis Hijau – turns cooking and spa oil into biodiesel.
  • R.O.L.E. Foundation ¬– recycles soap, candles and plastic bottle caps.
  • PT Triata from Surabaya – handles electronic and hazardous waste.
  • EcoCare, an eco-friendly and health-conscious hygiene service – handles toilet waste.

Beyond its own waste management, Alila Villas Uluwatu is also developing a collaboration with Parongpong RAW Lab, a private research institute from Parongpong Village, West Bandung, to create a positive impact solution for cigarette butt waste pollution using hydrothermal technology and waste-to-material methods.
